AAMSI, a Leader in Solving Diminishing Manufacturing Sources and Material Shortages – DMSMS
For over 40 years, Associated Aircraft Manufacturing & Sales, Inc. (AAMSI) has been a leader in resolving Diminishing Manufacturing Sources and Material Shortages (DMSMS) issues by providing specialized services and solutions that address the risks and challenges associated with parts obsolescence, sustainment and supply chain disruptions in aerospace, defense, and related industries.
For the Department of Defense, DMSMS (Diminishing Manufacturing Sources and Material Shortages) is a significant issue because it involves the loss or impending loss of source-controlled manufacturers or suppliers of items or raw materials that are critical for military systems and operations. When a component, material, or part is no longer produced—due to reasons like rapid technological change, uneconomical production, environmental regulations, or limited market demand—the DoD may be unable to repair, maintain, or procure essential equipment and systems. This, in turn, negatively impacts the operational readiness of mission critical assets for the Warfighter.
The problem today is being further exacerbated by several factors. Our aircraft, ships and land vehicles are operating far longer than their estimated lifecycles, not only under increased budget pressure but delays in new aircraft deliveries. OEMs often by necessity need to move on to the next platform and have overhead and staffing structures that make it difficult to support these fleets during the later years of the life cycle. At the same time, technology is advancing at a much faster pace resulting in critical components reaching end of life in the early phases of production.
It takes a nimble organization, creative engineering, and the agility to move fast to develop solutions to DMSMS. This is where AAMSI strives to play such a vital role. AAMSI takes a proactive approach when addressing DMSMS. AAMSI looks not only to solve the current issue at hand but value engineering the system for improved reliability while mapping when the next critical DMSMS issue may be take place.
AAMSI’s expertise is well known for solving both digital and analog electronic DMSMS which often involves manufacturing circuit boards that are no longer in production without having to respining the boards or trigger a Class 1 change, replacing components that are obsolete or “refreshing” key sections of the electronic system. Our expertise is deep, spanning from airborne radar systems to radio navigational systems to power protection systems. AAMSI’s work is well recognized in the DMSMS community and military bases around the world. Our capabilities not only address issues inside the box but also involve the development of test procedures and test solutions that can no longer be duplicated with archaic equipment and test boxes in technical manuals or component maintenance manuals.
AAMSI’s engineering prowess extends from circuit evaluation using electronic engineering software (such as SPICE) to testing and qualification of Shop Replacement and Line Replacement units using a full suite of new generation test equipment. Our 52,000 sq. foot facility is fitted with burn-in stations, power cycle test frames, high voltage testing, 3-axis random vibration systems capable of simulating 20g flight conditions, fast ramping stress testing chambers reaching +80C and -55C, BIT testing, anechoic testing and crypto testing just to name a few.
While AAMSI is best known for its solutions to DMSMS issues for electronics and electrical systems, with the assistance of AAMSI’s sister companies that hold multiple parts manufacturing and FAA/EASA maintenance approvals, we are able to tackle DMSMS issues for other types of systems including:
Landing gear, including hydraulics and electromechanical actuation
Hydraulic power packs
Pressure vessels and hydrostatic testing, including oxygen and fire suppression systems
Flight controls and structural parts,
Propellers and propeller control systems; and
Rotor blades and dynamic components.
